Beginner's mistakes

Mistakes that beginners make

As long as you are aware of the most common beginner’s mistakes then your chances of avoiding them are a lot better. Here are the most important things to avoid:

  • If you are too eager to play, you might make the mistake of joining a game even though your hand is far from good enough. This is one of the most classical reasons why you are not winning in the beginning. Patience and self knowledge are two things that will come in handy here.
  • The knowledge that there is money to be made can make a player get a bit greedy. The prospect of winning a lot of cash can fool you to become unwise in your game, and not fold in time. Stay rational, even when the pot is big. Same goes when you are playing online poker.
  • If you are not used to winning, you probably aren’t used to losing either. Don’t behave childishly when you don’t perform as well as you wish – in other words, don’t be a bad loser. You will lose respect from the other players, and you won’t have as fun. Don’t play aggressively from fear of losing either.
  • Don’t drink and play. To a certain extent you can drink beer or similar, but getting drunk during the game is pretty much the worst thing you can do. Especially if you are a rookie. If you want to achieve well and make your casino game better, you’ll want to stay fairly sober. Otherwise you can lose everything; your money, your dignity and the game. Not to mention the damage it’ll do to your health in the long run.
  • Even though it is good to get influenced by other players, don’t imitate them. They have their own styles that are based on their skills and knowledge. You don’t need their strategies, you need your own, that are suited to your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Get to know the different hands and combinations of cards. Sometimes rookies tend to overestimate the hand that they have. Try not to do this mistake.
  • There is no such think as luck. There is something called “chance”, but in the long runt, that applies to all players. It is OK to believe in luck of course, but to act overly superstitious is not really accepted in a serious game.
  • Basically, practice your memory, your patience and your math. The better you know yourself, the more you can use that knowledge to your advantage.
