The history of poker

Today, poker is a well-known treat through out the world, but it hasn’t always been like that.
Since the early 19th century, it has been used as pass time in America. Then, it began as a card game commonly played on river boats, and the player only had 20 cards all in all. The task at hand was too guess what cards the other persons had, and which of them was the very best. After the gold rush in USA, 32 cards were added and as you all know, that makes 52 cards, which still is the sum of cards in a classic deck.

Poker was also played in Asia, particularly in China. But it was in America that it really became popular, and in the sixties, most people knew of it, and plenty were playing it. Then, the wild card and the lowball had been invented and in not too long, the World Series of Poker began. The rest is pretty much history; today poker is spread globally and maybe particularly on the internet. Online poker is very popular among both younger and older players, and more than one lucky person has gained a fortune from the game. Unfortunately, probably one or two have lost large sums of money as well…

Today, poker is so common, that several poker terms are used so oftenly in our every-day-life that we don’t longer notice that it is from the game. Some examples would include “beats me”, “high roller”, “ace up ones sleeve” and “poker face”.

We are naturally very happy that poker developed so much, and it is highly possible that it will keep growing, both in real life and with online poker. It is definitely fun enough, and it can be played in so many different kinds of ways, so it should never have to bore anyone.
