While 7 Card Stud uses the same hand rankings as Texas Hold’em, the similarities end there. There are no community cards in 7 Card Stud, so each player plays only the cards in his or her hand. Each player who stays in until the end will have seven cards total, and they will use five of them to make their best poker hand.

To start, all players must put in an ante. This is a small amount that every player must place in the pot prior to any cards being dealt. In games that antes are used, there are no blinds as there are in Texas Hold’em.

After everyone has anted, the dealer deals each player two cards face-down (called hole or pocket cards) and then one card face-up.

The player with the lowest card showing face-up has to put in a small bet called a “bring in.” Then betting then proceeds to the left, around the table. Each player can call, raise, or fold their cards.

After the first round of betting is finished, each player still in is dealt face-up another face-up card. Players then bet, raise, or fold, with the action starting with the player that has the highest cards showing. This round betting round is also known as “fourth street” or “the turn.”

After betting is finished, the fifth card (referred to as “fifth street”) is dealt face-up. Another betting round follows, and then the sixth card is dealt, face-up, followed by another bet round.

The 7th and final card is dealt face-down to all players remaining in the hand. A final round of betting occurs, followed by showdown, where any remaining players turn over their hands, with the best five card hand taking the pot.
