There are three variants of lowball that we will discuss in this article, 2 to 7 lowball, Ace to Five lowball, and 2 to 7 single draw.
The object in lowball poker is to get the worst five card hand. In 2 to 7 lowball, also known as Kansas City Lowball, straights and flushes hurt your hand and count as their rank. Also, the ace always plays high. Therefore, the best hand in 2 to 7 lowball is 2-3-4-5-7.
In ace to five lowball, also known as California Lowball, straights and flushes do not count against your hand, must the same as in Razz. Aces are always low and a pair of aces is lower than a pair of deuces. The wheel is the best hand in ace to five lowball, or A-2-3-4-5.
2 to 7 lowball and ace to five lowball are typically triple draw games. To start a hand of lowball, the dealer is determined by a dealer button and two players post blinds similar to Holdem. Each player is then dealt five cards face down. A round of betting then occurs. Most triple draw lowball games are limit betting and this round as well as the betting round after the first draw are in the small bet amounts.
After the first betting round is completed, a player may draw up to five cards. They may also elect to not draw cards at all. This is referred to as standing pat. One point to note is that in some cases of a player drawing five cards, some casinos require that a player not receive five consecutive cards. If a player draws five, they would receive four cards, the other players would get their cards, and then the player would get their last card. If you are unsure of the rule at your venue, ask and a floor person will give you a ruling.
Three drawing rounds will occur, with a round of betting after each. The betting after the 2nd and third draw are in the big bet amounts. After the last betting round occurs, the players show their hands, and the player with the lowest hand wins the pot. In the case of a tied hand, the pot of split.
2 to 7 single draw lowball is a variation of lowball that is normally played in with No-Limit betting. The rules are the same as lowball, but there is only one draw. This is a popular bracelet event among pros at the World Series of Poker.
If you haven’t already deduced, lowball is an action game. It is a regular staple of the Big Game in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and can result in many substantial pots. It is also a game that is beginning to get quite a following online as a new generation of players can try to play it at small stakes.
