Internet Poker Tournament Rules

Most major sites like PokerRoom.com offer a variety of tournaments that run around the clock in games including Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and 7 Card Stud.

Tournaments are a bit different, as you pay a set amount and then are given chips. You might pay $20 to enter a Texas Hold’em No Limit tournament, and each player will begin play with 1,500 chips. While the chips you win or lose in the tournament don’t have any actual value, they do determine the winners, and how much prize money you might receive.

Other than paying a set entry fee and getting a certain amount of chips, tournaments are played exactly like a normal game would be, using the rules outlined before. Most offer a five minute break after every hour of play, to stretch your legs, but otherwise the rules are exactly the same as normal games.

Another small difference is that the blinds in tournaments start low but escalate slowly over time. This is to ensure that a tournament finishes in a reasonable amount of time, so don’t be surprised to see blinds and antes increase over time in a tournament, as that’s perfectly normal.
